Last weekend, I took part in the Canon Photomarathon Competition. It was an extremely challenging day, since the themes are not mentioned beforehand, giving us participants little time to make a picture that best tells the theme. The rainy Saturday that ensued throughout the day, made the following week a lot worse for me, as the flu starts kicking in full gear.

For the event, I took with me a pair of kit lens (the 18-55mm and the 55-250mm lens) and the 50mm prime. It’s more than enough for me to take some good pictures I hoped will make it to the selection list. (I later found out – those who saw my tantrum in Facebook will know – that while that may be true, there’s more to it than just making good pictures.) As many would have already known, the themes that were released to the contestants – Togetherness, Motion and Energy – were only given in each three-hour interval, of which contestants must submit their photograph before the annointed time, in order to qualify for the selection list. From these selection lists, three pictures will be awarded to first, second and third prizes, in order of which picture the judges believe are worth its placing.

The following pictures that I took on that day isn’t something to be proud of (still learning), but hey, now that my nerves have calmed down since two days ago, I will attempt to put in a coherent picture montage of the scenery I took during that day.

Evidently, I ran out of creative energy to take anything remotely related to it. So yeah, the last picture was really a desperate attempt.

OK, for some backstory:

Side Story

  1. I pointed out to the skateboarder in front of that weird statue. Apparently I met him twice in the same day: once while I talked to him to take a photo of him, and twice when I spotted him again while alighting the City Hall MRT Station. It was delightful that we met again. His name’s Colin, although I may yet see him again.
  2. I point out to the kid with the firefighter. Apparently there’s one idiotic contestant from Indonesia that blocked my complete access to the entire portrait profile of both the kid and the firefighter. If he was out of sight I could’ve won the first category – since I am not allowed to make any editions of this photograph. I had to crop the heck out of that bugger.
  3. Related to 2.: Apparently the parents of the kid were inquiring why there’s so many photographers on that morning. I explained to her the details of the competition at hand, so she was amused by it. Anyway, I gave her my contact card, should she need any of my pictures or permission to publicly post them.

Side-shots

Here are some of the pictures I took conveniently along the way that I see, to enliven the otherwise staid post I’m making now.

Damn this Rain! BTW, this picture is released into Free Domain. Feel free to make amends to it.

Almost made it as a candidate for Motion-themed photograph. :P

Is it lineart? Is it subject isolation? Is it just another photograph? (Picture is released into Free Domain.)

I managed to sneek into a certain building, where the Singapore Idol finalists had their meet-the-fans session. Damn the crowd mustve been packed (at least in a Singaporeans perspective.)

Oh, well. It looks like I’m a street candid photographer now. (Really?)
